The Middelheim Museum is an open-air sculpture park with an international collection and temporary exhibitions.
In addition to the works displayed in the museum park, which together provide an overview of more than a hundred years of sculpture, special solo and group exhibitions take place regularly and images from the collection are presented in thematic exhibitions. In addition to the sculpture collection, the park is also a strong example of landscape art.
About the show
With COME CLOSER, (7 June until 29 September 2024) Middelheim Museum and DE SINGEL
international arts center jointly explore the space between sculpture and performance art. This
collaboration gathers international artists that show works in a variety of forms from sculpture and
installations to performances.
Functieomschrijving
Middelheim museum is seeking 10 people with a performance or movement
practice background to perform different works from different artists during
the show COME CLOSER at Middelheim museum from June to September
2024.
The group will perform during ‘performance weekends’ happening each first
weekend of the month for a total of four weekends.
6 – 9 June
6 – 7 July
3 – 4 August
31 August – 01 September
During performance weekends there will be shifts of 4 hours. We expect from
the group of performers to follow a rotation system, mixing performances and
activations of installations/ sculptures.
PERFORMANCES
CHLOË BASS – 9 PARTS
The performance is a moving choreography in the park where performers wear printed clothing that carries texts and images. The work is a personal reflection (like txt messages or fragments from a journal) that connect intimate thoughts to bigger events in society. Performers will work also with their voice.
Performance duration: 45 - 90 min

Performers requirements: mixed in gender, age and race
Age: min 18y
Experience: we welcome performers of various backgrounds: dance, theatre, visual art, performance, martial arts, voice work, traditional dance, circus, urban dances etc
We welcome anyone who is comfortable and keen to work with physical movement and the use of their voice in a frontal/performative context and as part of a group.
Basic movement coordination is essential, as is the pleasure of being looked at. A diverse age spectrum is welcome.

ROGER HIORNS – PATHWAYS
The performance exists out of a male-identifying nude performer that takes place (sits/hangs/stands) on industrial elements (machine / medical bath). The performer represents youth.

Selection: Middelheim team for Roger Hiorns
Performance day hours: 2 performances of 15 minutes per 4 hours shift
We will foresee an extra fee for performing naked to be added to the standard daily fee
NOTE:
- performers perform naked
- catering is foreseen on performance days

ULA SICKLE – Relay (Extended)
The performance is a durational piece with several black flags that represent a symbol of protest. The flags are being kept constantly in motion by a group of performers.

ACTIVATIONS
Other works we will ask to activate in rotation with the performances are
sculpture or installations that needs a physical presence, we are planning to
have small activation moments (not communicated to the public) where
people can perceive the interaction.
SUPERFLEX – ONE TWO THREE SWING!
The activation consists in using the swing and asking people to join the 6 seats
pieces, the movement of the swing is conceptually changing the world in connection
with other swings.
ISAMU NOGUCHI - PLAY SCULPTURE
The activation consists in using the sculpture in a playful way with your body,
sleeping, reading, hugging the work, free from body constrictions.
TEMITAYO OGUNBIYI – YOU WILL MAKE WISHES FOR YOUR
NEIGHBOR (54 DAYS)
The activation consists in having a meditative moment with people looking at the
sculpture, reading the text printed on stones and eventually talking with people
around you about it.
SARAH & CHARLES – PUPPETRY & PUPPETS
The activation consists in using the installation as a stage (bringing texts or
improvising each time) for a short period of time of maximum 20 minutes.
TUUR &FLUP MARINUS with ARIADNA ESTALELLA ALBA – A WALK
IN THE SCULPTURE PARK
The activation consists in following the 20 minute long audio piece following the
instructions the artists are giving to the public (with some small physical activations)
