ADMISSON REQUIREMENTS
In order to be eligible for this position, candidates must
- meet the general requirements outlined in article V.106 of the Flemish “Higher Education Codex” of 20 December 2013.
- be in possession of a master’s degree in art history, curatorial studies, cultural studies or relevant equivalent.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Curatorial Studies postgraduate program of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts / Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten (KASK) of University College Ghent, is looking for an artistic lecturer ‘Graduation Project’ to join the Curatorial Studies team.
Curatorial Studies is an intensive one-year postgraduate program covering key positions, legacies, ideas, and debates important to the curatorial. By drawing on the expertise of a broad network of cultural practitioners and institutions, the course aims to facilitate an environment in which a multiplicity of perspectives and critical discourses can thrive. Established in 1999, the program is the result of a collaboration between KASK & Conservatorium/ School of Arts of HOGENT and Howest, Ghent University, and S.M.A.K. – the contemporary art museum in Ghent. The program attracts high-level national and international students, a majority of whom find employment in museums, commercial galleries, academia and art organizations upon graduation.
Tasks and responsibilities
- Teach Graduation Project course (weekly 3-hour class), including all aspects of curatorial practice: studio visits, writing and editing, fundraising, loan requests, transport and installation of art works, scenography, event management, audience mediation, press outreach, and more. The final exhibition takes place in an art organization in the Belgian art field.
- Find opportunities to engage with exhibition exercises.
- Participate in Curatorial Studies team meetings and carry out administrative duties related to the “Graduate” class.
- Plan and/or take part in off-site Curatorial Studies visits.
Profiel
Required:
- Curatorial experience in various institutions.
- Thorough knowledge of contemporary art.
- Teaching experience within a higher education context.
- Ability to teach and carry out administrative tasks in English.
Desirable:
- International network in prominent museums, art organizations and/or galleries.
- Bilingual English and Dutch.
- Collegial, student-focused approach to teaching and learning.
Aanbod
Recruitment will be made at 15% of a full-time job within the Fine Arts department of KASK-Royal Conservatory, the School of Arts of the University College Ghent. Initial appointment starts in October 2023, subject to renewal based on an evaluation at the end of the academic year.
The position is offered as a fixed-term contract (as a guest professor), from 01-10-2023 to 30-09-2024.
You will be appointed at the rank of guest professor at the 512 level of the Flemish salary scale, more information about which can be accessed here https://data-onderwijs.vlaanderen.be/salaris/schalen/.
